This exhibition documents Damon Amb’s nightly wanderings, which are unplanned and sometimes disorienting. The theme of darkness evokes the various uncertainties and hidden dangers, phobias and traumas of Damon’s past.
Damon came to Australia as an asylum seeker in 2013 and experienced Australia’s punitive immigration detention system. No sooner was he released than his family posted him his camera, and he commenced documenting the life of his new society.
Damon has stubbornly continued his art practice despite the government’s coercive policies towards refugees, including the pressure of living on temporary visas with limited work-rights, which has strained his finances and personal health.
‘If you want to know a society, explore it at night’ – Damon
